Tips for Moving: 10 Tips for a Time Crunched Move

Ten Time-Saving Tips for a Last-Minute Move

Did your house sell much quicker than expected? The clock is ticking, and you have an attic, a basement, a garage, and all your daily belongings that need to be packed up fast. Today, we’re sharing the best time-saving hacks that will help you speed through moving. Try out these ten tips for moving, and you’ll be moved in in no time.

  1. Make a plan and schedule

Solid schedules make for swift moves. Set a timer for 15 minutes and jot down which days you’ll pack which rooms, as well as any important moving deadlines or meetings. Snap a picture of your schedule so that you can quickly access it on your phone.

  1. Delegate

There’s no time to do it all alone. As soon as possible, call up and schedule any professional movers and cleaners that can help you get the job done fast (the more advance notice you give them, the lower their rates will be). Call up babysitters, pet sitters, family, friends, anyone who can help take some of the load off your shoulders so you can focus on packing.  Check out these tips we found on hiring professional movers!

  1. Make your phone calls all at once

Pour yourself a cup of coffee, sit down at the desk, and bang through all the important phone calls and notifications you need to send out. Make sure you notify your utility companies, service providers, the post office, as well as family and friends, giving them as much advance notice as possible.

  1. Buy extra materials

On your way home today, swing by Home Depot, Office Depot, Staples, or Walmart and grab your packing materials. Make sure to buy boxes, sturdy packing tape, scissors, cushioning materials, a thick marker, and furniture stretch wrap. You’ll almost certainly use more than you think, so grab a few extra boxes and rolls of tape to cut down on driving time.

  1. Pack a moving essentials bag

Before you begin boxing up your home, pack the items you’ll need in the first week after move day. Gather cooking essentials, dishes and utensils, the coffee pot, clothes, toiletries, cleaning supplies, bed linens, towels, electronics, and toilet paper. Set that box aside so it’s easy to access right after move-in.

  1. Purge

Once your essentials are packed, sweep through the house quickly and remove any obvious items or pieces of furniture you no longer love or need. The less you have to haul with you, the easier and cheaper your move will be.

  1. Pack one room at a time

Now is not the time to organize. If you’re down to the wire, simply start boxing. You can, though, keep your items somewhat organized by working room by room. Below, we’ll show you how to label your boxes quickly so that your items are easier to unpack.

  1. Keep labels simple, clear, and consistent

Label in three steps to save time without compromising on clarity. First, mark the box’s destination (where you want it to end up in your new home). Next, number the box on the inner flap and on the exterior. Finally, snap a picture of the open box, being sure to include the box number in the picture. In a few seconds, you’ll have your boxes labeled, organized, and their contents recorded.

  1. Don’t pack your clothes

Keep your closet clothes hung and simply wrap them in a heavy-duty trash bag. The clothes in your drawers can stay there too. This step will save you time while packing now and unpacking later on.

  1. Work for two hours

Our minds are only capable of concentrating for around two hours. Keep yourself working efficiently and quickly by packing hard for two hours and then taking a quick 5-10 minute break. Have some water, eat an energizing snack, and get back to it!
