If you’re longing for that picturesque Christmas experience amidst cozy historic homes, charming local bakeries, and a fresh layer of white snow on the ground, you’ve come to the right place. Lancaster becomes a winter wonderland in December, setting the stage for the perfect story-book Christmas.

From Turkey and mashed potatoes to Christmas trees and mistletoes, Lancaster is the place to be this December. Today, we’ll show you how to have a festive December in Lancaster County. Make a hot drink, cozy up with a blanket, and get to planning your month’s activities leading up to Christmas.

Stroll Through Glowing Gardens

With vibrant blooms and dancing fountains, Longwood Gardens is a beautiful place to visit any time of year. As Christmas approaches, however, these gardens become truly magical. Towering trees are decked in festive decor, flickering flame lanterns light the path, ice sculptures, wintery displays, and a half-million Christmas lights make for an amazing winter experience.

Catch a Holliday Show

Each December, couples and families bundle up and venture out to see a live performance. Lancaster is home to a number of theaters, each with its own holiday shows in December. Find your favorite Christmas play or concert and buy tickets at the Bird-in-Hand Stage, Dutch Apple Dinner Theater, Fulton Theater, or American Music Theater.

Shop for Christmas Crafts and Cookies

Fresh baked seasonal treats, beautiful handcrafted goods that are perfect for Christmas gifts, and steamy sweet drinks fill the Kitchen Kettle Village with holiday cheer. Each December, visitors can toast marshmallows over an open fire, buy cozy Amish quilts, and load up on cookies and fudge. Families can enjoy dinner with Mrs. Clause or attend a scavenger hunt with Santa.

Take a Christmas Tree Train Ride

Jump aboard the Christmas Tree Train on December 3rd or 4th to Leaman Place Grove. There, you can pick your favorite of the pre-cut Frasier or Douglas Fir trees. The train will deliver it back with you to the station.

Join an Amish Christmas Cookie Tour

Throughout the month of December, locals and visitors can take a festive journey through three authentic Amish homes and sample their homemade Christmas cookies. During your tour, you’ll learn about Amish Christmas traditions, explore farmyards and schoolhouses, drive the scenic backroads of Lancaster in winter, and go home with a stock of tasty baked goods.
